New addition to the lot! And I’m in love!!
Make a little Brooch, get down tonight and check out the shop! Remember 30% of all sales from my shop in the month of October is being donated to GiGi’s Playhouse - Houston!!
October is Down Syndrome Acceptance Month! In honor of this month and my beautiful, funny, curious, strong and giggly niece - Elliott, and her amazing parents - 30% of all sales during the month of October will be donated to GiGi’s Playhouse- Houston.
In addition to this month’s donation, I have some select Down syndrome community designs featured on necklaces and earrings for sale. 30% of the sale of these designs will always be donated to GiGi’s Playhouse-Houston. (Cufflinks and Tiebars available on request)
A little about GiGi’s Playhouse:
GiGi's Playhouses are Down syndrome achievement centers that offer 100% FREE programs and therapies to people of all ages with Down syndrome. They provide purposeful programs for each stage of life helping everyone with an extra 21st chromosome to be their very best self. GiGi's Playhouses offer community, camaraderie and support to families touched by Down syndrome. At GiGi’s Playhouse families are never alone. From a prenatal diagnosis to career skills, they make a lifetime commitment to remain by their side. Families are empowered with all the tools their child needs to succeed! GiGi'sPlayhouse was created to change the way the world views a Down syndrome diagnosis and to send a global message of acceptance for all.
October is Down syndrome awareness month, but really, we like to call it Down syndrome acceptance month 🙂 To have Down syndrome means a person was born with a 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome. The medical term is Trisomy 21. Therefore the meaning of 21 and 3 is very strong in this community. In fact, March 21st (3/21) is World Down syndrome Day!
The extra chromosome brings lots of other extras. A person with Down syndrome can learn and do most everything someone without Ds can, but it may take them longer and more practice. It's places like GiGi's Playhouses that encourage and fuel that development fire with purposeful programs and the right tools to teach a person with Ds so that they can be their very best self! Everyone deserves to learn and be independent whether you have an extra chromosome or you don't.
Now with over 38 GiGi’s Playhouse locations nationwide (one in Mexico!) Houston is next on the list with a grand opening later this year. With your support they can open their doors and serve the Down syndrome community of Houston with FREE programs - and even more importantly, ensure no one limits a person with Down syndrome but rather is accepting of all the magic that extra 21st chromosome brings!

This summer was filled with seemingly endless teaching, some much needed adventure and a studio move. But after a wild last few month I am finally (almost) all moved into my new space and I am really excited to be back at the bench again!!

Come check out this piece, “Moderne Necklace”, the work of Lisa Johnson, Mark Walnock and Many of our students during the connections opening this Friday August 10,2018 from 6-8pm at the @armoryartcenter
August 3rd – August 17th
Exhibition Reception: Friday, August 10, 2018
Connections features artwork by Armory Art Center instructors Mark Walnock in Ceramics, Lisa Johnson and Maria Tritico in Jewlery /Metalsmithing, and their students.
These active, inspiring, and dynamic teachers provide expertise and dialogues with their students to inspire and to help find their artistic voices. Likewise, students bring their experiences and visions of what they plan to create and hope to accomplish in class. This relationship creates Connections, a synergy between teachers and students.
Connections are also relevant between these two disciplines as both are three-dimensional. Although the technical approach to developing work in Ceramics and Jewelry/Metalsmithing is different, they connect with the same design language, tackle similar concepts, and share concerns regarding surface, scale, and functionality.
“To develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.”
Leonardo Da Vinci

Rose Gold Vermeil Triangle Necklace

Gold vermeil is an overlay of gold over a base of sterling silver. Gold vermeil jewelry requires special care. Remember to store your gold vermeil jewelry in an airtight container when not in use—and to remove before applying perfumes, lotions, or before bathing. Chlorine, especially at high temperatures, can permanently damage or discolor your gold vermeil jewelry. Avoid wearing gold vermeil jewelry while using chlorine bleach or while in a pool or hot tub.
^^ Good advice for all fine jewelry^^

With vermeil objects and jewelry, the gilding process limits oxidation of the underlying metals (Sterling Silver), greatly reducing the need for cleaning and polishing, and so reduces the risk of damage to them. To further reduce the risk of tarnish store your jewelry (vermeil and silver alike) in an airtight bag or box when not in use.
Diamond Earrings in 24K Gold vermeil (image 1) and Rose Gold vermeil (image 2) - $225
Dimensions for both: 1” x 2”
Most large objects made in goldsmithing that appear to be gold are actually silver-gilt; for example most sporting trophies (including medals such as the gold medals awarded in all Olympic Games after 1912) and many crown jewels are silver-gilt objects. Apart from the raw materials being much less expensive to acquire than solid gold of any karat, large silver-gilt objects are also noticeably lighter if lifted, as well as more durable (gold is about as heavy as lead and is highly malleable and easily scratched).
This diamond necklace is 24k gold vermeil. The pendant is 3” x 1.5” with an 18” chain - $240
Did you know there is a “Vermeil Room” at the White House?
The Vermeil Room is located on the ground floor of the White House, the official residence of the President of the United States. The room houses a collection of silver-gilt or vermeil tableware, a 1956 bequest to the White House by Margaret Thompson Biddle. Portraits of American First Ladies hang in the room.
Margaret Thompson Biddle's collection was significant and ranges from Renaissance to 19th-century French and English pieces. The collection includes work by English Regency silversmith Paul Storr (1771–1844) and French Empire silversmiths Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), and Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot (1763–1850). First Lady Mamie Eisenhower had the collection displayed in the room's glass-enclosed vitrines.
